Don was born in east Virginia and came from Alabama with a banjo on his knee. Don was the banjologist and co-founder of the Dallas, TX band Spare the Horses. He and Kevin Joseph started STH the week Don moved to Dallas from Atlanta, GA. In Hotlanta, he played the five string with Hicks with Picks and the Georgia Mountain Stringband. 

After Spare the Horses, Don formed Over the River with Kim Herriage, Floramay Holliday, Erik Swanson, and Larry Reed.

Don now plays with Bodarks Revival.
